Choosing the right packaging depends on the bottle format and the type of transport being used. For everyday courier deliveries of standard wine and Champagne bottles, a Budget shipping box with cardboard dividers provides reliable protection. For higher-risk parcel networks, Mailsafe, Honey Hex and Pulpsafe feature protective inserts that absorb impacts and help ensure bottles arrive safely. For air freight, Polysafe's polystyrene inserts and Safe Air's inflatable dividers offer the highest levels of protection.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between an insert, a sleeve and a full shipping box?

A shipping box is the outer container: the corrugated cardboard structure that holds and protects the contents during transit. Inserts, such as Pulpsafe, Mailsafe and Polysafe, fit inside the box and create individual compartments around each bottle to absorb impacts and help reduce breakages. Protective sleeves, including Honeycomb sleeves, wrap around individual bottles to provide an additional layer of cushioning and help protect labels from scuffs and scratches.

Can I ship with just a sleeve or wrap?

No. Honeycomb sleeves and elasticated card sleeves provide additional cushioning and label protection, but they are not designed to be used on their own for shipping. To minimise the risk of damage, bottles should be packed in a suitable shipping box, ideally with a protective insert for courier-network deliveries. If you're unsure which packaging solution is right for your bottles, our sales team can help.

Which protection is best for fragile items?

Pulpsafe uses moulded pulp inserts that provide some of the highest levels of shock absorption for fragile and high-value items, which is why it is DPD-approved. It is available in 1, 2, 3, 6 and 12-bottle formats. For single-bottle shipments, Honey Hex also offers excellent protection by completely surrounding the bottle with a honeycomb cushioning layer. Both Pulpsafe and Honey Hex are 100% recyclable. Safe Air and Polysafe also provide a high level of protection, making them suitable for demanding shipping environments. However, unlike Pulpsafe and Honey Hex, they are not plastic-free.

How heavy does a full bottle pack get?

As a rough guide, a standard 75cl wine bottle weighs around 1.3kg, while a 75cl Champagne bottle weighs approximately 1.6kg. A 500ml beer bottle typically weighs around 600g. The total shipping weight will also include the weight of the packaging, which varies depending on the box and insert combination used.
