We all know that investing in eye-catching merchandise is one of the most effective ways to build brand awareness. And, if it’s really spectacular, it may even become a must-have that gets you shares all over social media. But there’s one item that truly raises the bar when it comes to great returns on your marketing investment: The tote bag.
As packaging experts in the food and drinks sector, we have a keen interest in everything to do with this clever piece of merch and work closely with our suppliers to ensure that our own offerings are sustainably produced to the highest possible standards.
This also inspired our partnership in a sustainable social business venture, Cocobagh, which empowers disadvantaged Bengali women to learn the art of stitching and bag making, thereby affording them long-term careers.
So, from its rather pedestrian reputation in the 1600s to its celebrity status today, we invite you to join us as we explore its illustrious history; and why you should have your own tote collection personalised in time for Christmas.
How tote bags came about
Now a brilliant balance between useful and elegant, the term originated in the latter part of the 17th century. At the time, it referred to the process of carrying daily essentials, often with the help of pouches and satchels made from cloth or leather.
The concept of an actual bag didn’t take flight until 1944, when outdoor lifestyle brand L.L. Bean developed one for transporting ice from car to freezer. A common problem for American households at the time, it was enthusiastically received and quickly became used for a variety of other things as well.
As all good businesses do, the company joined its own bandwagon, added colour to the design, and expanded its range—which remains one of its bestselling products to date.
Fifteen years later, designer Bonnie Cashin introduced a range of gorgeous leather totes to the fashion industry, setting a new trend in the world of essential accessories. Available in a variety of shades, they were big enough to carry a second bag within, making life for newly empowered working women a little easier...and signifying another milestone on its road to success.
The next big leap happened in the 1980s when British icon Jane Birkin was seated next to Jean-Louis Dumas (CEO of Hermes) on a flight from Paris to London. The unfortunate man found himself at the receiving end of her infamous wicker basket’s self-destruction as it slipped out of the overhead and exploded into his lap. Being both a gentleman and a visionary, he immediately offered to make her something new...which became a quintessential accessory collection that is still one of the most expensive in the world.
This, in turn, drove businesses (initiated by The Strand bookshop in New York) to begin branding fabric bags as a cost-effective form of marketing, advantageously using them as walking billboards that captured the attention of the masses.
By 2010, totes had become a symbol of sustainability and were embraced by both retailers and consumers looking to solve the issues plastic bags were having on the environment. And, with continued buy-in from all concerned, their legacy as a shopping accessory and a viral fashion statement has ensured that they are set to grace supermarket aisles and catwalks for decades to come.
And that’s where our partnership begins...
Why the popularity of tote bags is on the rise
Sought after by marketing-savvy retailers and consumers alike, there are some very viable reasons why fabric bags remain in the limelight (and will continue to do so far into the future). Here are just a few:
From an advertising point of view:
1. They provide a generous surface area for personalisation, increasing brand visibility wherever they go.
2. Whether given away at trade shows or bought in-store, they're an outstanding return on investment.
3. They maintain brand visibility over decades without the incurrence of extra costs.
4. They help to create memorable customer journeys, building lasting loyalty and trust.
5. They are a clever way of expressing core brand values that resonate with your target audiences.
6. They can be used collaboratively, boosting both your business and those you may be partnering with.
From a shopper’s point of view:
1. They’re affordable.
2. Easy to transport, consumers can pack them full of schoolbooks, gym clothes, picnic supplies and anything else you can think of.
3. From their colour, size and shape to their practical functionality, they offer unmatched versatility.
4. Well-branded totes convey personal tastes and beliefs to peer groups, which is why they trend on social media.
5. Durable and sustainable, they are a viable way to reduce one’s carbon footprint.
How to pair a fabric bag with your product offerings
Totes are a particularly good form of merchandise for several business sectors, providing a myriad of different functions. However, not all fabric bags are born equal, so it’s important to consider the following before investing:
1. Think about its purpose and find an appropriate size.
2. Select a hardwearing material (cheap options are often binned within a week).
3. Make sustainability a priority.
4. Opt for a design that epitomises comfort, functionality and style.
5. Decide whether you need special features like zips and pockets.
Great suggestions to suit different user profiles
Believe us, there's a tote for every occasion, so take a look at these recommendations and find the one that suits you best.
Event venues:
Handing out goodie bags is a common practice for event companies and helps to foster goodwill amongst attendees. Well-considered designs and quality fillers that resonate with the theme make a lasting impression on target audiences, giving them a memorable experience that will keep them coming back for more.
However, you don’t want to have to load it with hundreds of expensive freebies, so choose a small tote made from something durable and lightweight like cotton or Juco.
Wine merchants:
Specialist businesses call for specialist bags, and at WBC we have exactly what you need to make sure your customers walk away with their precious cargo safely taken care of.
From six-unit bottle bags with removable dividers (so you can include other goodies) to smaller ones for beer, they’re all beautifully crafted from resilient jute, ensuring that they can carry the weight without risking disaster.
Farm stalls and delis:
Great retail experiences are enhanced by key factors like beautifully curated displays, freshly baked produce, gorgeous selections of fine foods...and a really good bag to put them all in. And this is where our classic shopper comes into play.
With extra features like double handles (so you can sling them over your shoulder), strong gussets and special inners to keep refrigerated products cool during transit, they’re guaranteed to be a hit.
Market vendors:
Encouraging customers to buy more is always a good thing, especially if you’re trading at well-attended fairs and are expecting to thrive over the festive season.
For that reason, we have an extra-large market bag on offer, expertly designed to take a generous load. Choose from denim, jute or canvas in a style that best suits your brand.
Corporate gifting companies:
Looking to create an unboxing experience with a difference? Then fabric bags are the key to success.
From fun drawstring sacks that speak of Christmas to all the above, choosing the right one for your fillers is a cinch – and you’ll be giving a gift that will be reused for years to come.
